The Element of Spirituality

Spirituality is Universal and Timeless

Spirituality spans religious, political, economic, and cultural beliefs or circumstances.  It is for adults, teens, children, and people of all genders. It is for the simple-minded and cognitively advanced, the educated and non-educated. Spirituality spans race, ethnicity, culture, and nationality. It is for the privileged and the marginalized, the sinners and the saints. It is for those who are experiencing ease and joy and is most certainly for those who are struggling and suffering.

Spirituality is for Everyone

It is for those who are Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Buddhist, Baptist, Hindu, Evangelical, Jehovah’s Witness, Islamic, Latter Day Saint, Pagan, Wicca, New Age, mystic, humanistic, astrologist, academic, numerologist, a 12-stepper, or practice tribal traditions. It is even for those who are agnostic or atheist. You do not have to believe in God to experience a rich and fulfilling spiritual life. Your “higher power” can be as broadly or narrowly defined as you want. It can be a deity or deities (He, She, They, It, or Self), nature, science, a spirit animal, expressing creativity, human connection, integrity, holding a baby, listening to music, meditating, serving others, mindfulness, or tuning into one’s inner wisdom.

Spirituality is Central to Happiness

No matter who you are, tuning into your spirituality is central to living as your best self. Because our spiritual needs are less apparent or immediately demanding than our physical, mental, financial, relational, or emotional needs, they are easily neglected or forgotten. Additionally, many people have experienced either a disconnection from or damage to their spirituality. It may be a result of religious trauma, abuse, neglect, discrimination, or feeling too busy to tune into something bigger. But without a rich spiritual life, our lives are incomplete, perhaps even empty.  Just because your spirituality has been neglected or damaged, however, it does not mean that it has not held a presence in your life.

Meeting your Spiritual Needs

Our membership in the human race inherently gives us the capability to access the power, growth, and healing of our spirituality. Our spiritual needs can be met through various means, and organized religion is only one. Organized religion provides many people with the guidance, structure, tradition, and community that they desire to enhance and deepen their spiritual lives. Other people do not connect to organized religion and define themselves as “not religious, but spiritual.” You may be practicing your spirituality through the religious practices of your cultural or family origins, or you may have discovered it someplace new. It does not matter the person or circumstance – each sect, practice, doctrine, or ritual that draws us closer to a rich spiritual life is worthy of our time and efforts.

Accessing Your Spirituality Can Be Simple

Tuning into your spirituality does not have to be a lengthy or overwhelming process. Even if you are experiencing some disconnect or pain from your past experiences, it can be as simple as feeling the breeze on your face, singing a song out loud in your car, saying a simple prayer, placing a rock on an altar, calling a friend, watching your child sleep, going for a walk, or thinking about what you are grateful for.

Spirituality as a Healing Tool

At Elemental Healing, we want to tap into your spirituality as a strength, healing element, and potential supportive community in your journey to a more satisfying life. Tuning into your spiritual self can also help you find meaning and peace after tragic events. If you have experienced spiritual damage, estrangement, disconnect, or even abuse, talk to your therapist about how they can help you repair, rediscover, rebuild, and strengthen your higher self in the way that feels right for you.
